What We Do
Established by the Florida Legislature, the Peace River Soil & Water Conservation District, a governmental subdivision of the State of Florida, was established October 9, 1950 under Florida Statutes 582 by local residents for the purpose of promoting and encouraging the wise use, management and general conservation of the County’s soil, water and related natural resources. The District is committed to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in Peace River through conservation of its natural resources.
- Public purpose
To promote sustainable agricultural production and the stewardship of our natural resources; including soil, water, and all natural systems. To increase public awareness and appreciation for the contributions which agriculture makes to our society, including the protection of natural habitat, and the production of food and fiber. - Boundaries / service area
Includes all of Desoto County in Florida. Bound on the north by Hardee County, on the south by Charlotte County, on the west by Sarasota County and Manatee County, and on the easy by Highlands County. The district comprises 639 square miles or 109,960 acres. - Services provided
Technical support to agricultural producers. Provide the community with information about the most recently scientifically developed practices, including, but not limited to those which enhance irrigation efficiency, water quality control, conservation planning, wildlife habitat management, and flood control. Also, to act as a liaison between agricultural producers and government agencies which offer cost-share funding for the implementation of the above practices. Provide to the public through print media, presentations, workshops, and personal contact, information regarding agricultural and environmental issues both in the rural and urban setting.
